Heat Shields, Industrial Heat Shields, Product Information -

Heat Shield Basics

A heat shield can be designed and utilized to shield a component from absorbing excessive heat from an external source, or can be designed to contain heat to maintain consistent gas/exhaust temperature.  This is accomplished by either, dissipating, reflecting or absorbing the heat.  At Thermal Control Products, we pride ourselves in designing many types of heat shields for applications such as exhaust thermal management, sensitive component protection, maintaining consistent gas temperatures, and protection of fuel, brake, transmission and electrical systems.

The three physical properties that determine how well a heat shield works are:

  • Reflectivity
  • Emissivity
  • Conductivity

A radiant type heat- shield/thermal barrier reflects the thermal energy away from a temperature sensitive surface. Emissivity and conductivity properties determine how much heat is transferred though an air gap between the heat source and shield as well as an additional air gap between the shield and the component that it is protecting. Due to weight and space constraints, Thermal Control Products must often custom design heat shields to facilitate and resolve an application.
